Portfolio Element 6 Coaching
Describe a coaching experience using the following as a guide.
A teacher comes to you asking for help using technology to support a research project he or she is doing in the near future.
What are some considerations you would take in coaching the teacher?
One consideration I would take in coaching the teacher is their level of pedagogy. Teachers are on different levels of delivering instruction, classroom management, and student relationships. Many teachers want to immediately jump in and begin a lesson or technology tool at the same level as another teacher, however, they are not ready to adequately deliver the same lesson due to their level of pedagogy. Sometimes their students are not ready use a specific tool due to their level of experience with technology in the classroom and what they have been accustomed to using.
What preparation would you do before meeting with the teacher?
I would like to know the specific standard in which the teacher is teaching. It is also helpful to know the level of students in which the teacher will be teaching. Many times I will review a teachers roster and check for inclusion classes, students that are in the behavior Tiers, and if it may be an honors or accelerated curriculum. I also find it helpful to reach out to my Instruction Technology PLC to ask for advice on what they are doing at their schools and what has been successful. Based on what I have researched I will have a few options for the teacher to consider and will work that teacher to find the best option to meet her students' needs.
What questions would you ask?
Some of the questions I would ask are the following:
What would you recommend?
My recommendation would be aligned with what would be most beneficial for the students use in order to meet the success criteria set by the teacher. Often times students are more comfortable using a tool than the teacher because they have experienced it in another class. In this situation I would recommend the tool and train the teacher as well as co teach with them. Teachers are very responsive to using a tool when the coach gives direct instruction and models a tool to students and allows the teacher to teach the standard.
How would you follow up?
I would follow up with the teacher by first co-teaching with them. I believe being in the classroom and being able to be with the teacher during instruction gives them a sense of security and takes off the pressure of a new tool. I would also follow up with the students before they presented their projects to make sure they understand whatever tool that has been made available to them. At the end of a lesson or project I believe it is import to follow up with the teacher to reflect on the process of the lesson but more importantly the learning outcomes of the students.

What questions would you ask?
Some of the questions I would ask are the following:
- What is the success criteria for this project?
- Do you have a template or guidelines for them to follow?
- What have you done in the past with students on research projects?
- What is your vision of how you want students to research, complete, and present their project?
- What tech tool did you have in mind to use?
- Have your students used this specific tool before?
